John David Luther Memorial Scholarship Fund

John David Luther Memorial Scholarship Fund

It is with the character, commitments and genuine love for others that their son had, together with knowing his true heart and goals to love and help others, that John and Bev have set forth The John David Luther Memorial Scholarship Fund. JD'sheart and the love he had for others lives on.

The intention of the scholarship is to help high school students, and graduates. It is available to successful applicants to help with college, or other types of formal education. It is also available to students and graduates who want to pursue a career without college or other formal school training, but want to enter a trade school or receive on the job training as a part of preparation for a career.

As managers of the fund, John and Bev have determined that all donations, and proceeds from fund raising activities will go to the scholarship fund. There will be no administrative costs or management compensation taken from the fund. They have also determined that the fund will be an open account, related to the bookkeeping. Anyone who would like to donate will be entitled to view the account records, to include receipts, expenses and the disbursements of the fund to scholarship recipients when they donate, or upon request thereafter.

We have 10 scholarship recipients selected for 2017, but have an open door - year round policy in trying to serve high school students, and young college and career adults in finding successful paths in life. Those interested should request an application from John and Bev.

John and Bev would like to thank all participants, and contributors to the success and goals of the Scholarship Fund to date, and those who may choose to help in the future. May the Lord bless and keep you..

At this time, we would like to announce and briefly introduce the 10 recipients of the scholarship as follows:

  • Czarius Demontae Balfour (Poppy)
  • Benhamin Lamon Baylor (BJ)
  • Taylor Bell
  • Cory David Contreras
  • Manuel Devon McAfee
  • Kaylin Anne Meek
  • Timothy Nesho Patterson, Jr.
  • Michael Anthony Resendez
  • Roderick Temple, Jr. (Maine)
  • Tim Young

Czarius Demontae Balfour (Poppy) excelled at sports and academics at Wharton High School. He has consequently received both sports and academic scholarships from several schools. Poppy would like to be a sports agent, and own a business.

Benjamin Lamon Baylor (BJ) also excelled at sports and academics at Wharton High School, so much that colleges across the country were sending reps and coaches to Wharton, TX.

BJ has accepted a football scholarship to play Division 1 football for Oregon State University. Many of us in the Wharton community are happy for BJ'swell earned scholarship, but would prefer a location closer to Wharton, where we could watch the exciting action he generates as a running back.

Taylor Bell, the love of JD Luther'slife, with their very special relationship and love for each other driving discussion and the intention to get married. Taylor is certainly one of the sweetest people you could ever meet.

She has taken a special interest and received training in photography. Demonstrating a genuine talent for the craft, she is currently employed as a photographer for The Aquarium restaurant in Houston TX, and hopes for continued success in the field. of photography

Cory David Contreras is a long term friend of JD, being only small boys when they enjoyed boating trips to the lake and gaming. Cory played tennis for Wharton High School, and has shown a real drive to succeed after graduation, working and also going to college.

Cory has not yet selected a career path, but is sure to be successful, given the passion he has demonstrated for life progress.

Manuel Devon McAfee is another long term friend of JD. He has graduated from Wharton High School, and been accepted at Wharton County Junior College. Manuel has not yet selected a career path, and has wisely identified that he needs guidance more that anything,

Not to make assumptions, Bev and John offer "guidance" first, in terms of prayer, then in sharing life experience, which would include both successful and failed ventures. Their door remains open to Manuel, and all who genuinely seek help.

Kaylin Anne Meek is a member of Lifeway Church in Hungerford, TX, serving as the praise and worship team drummer, and is an accomplished musician. She will be attending Wharton County Junior College, majoring in drama, and hopes to be moving on to a 4 year college and degree.

She is interested in seeking the Lord for guidance, and discovery of His perfect will for her life. She would be open to mission work, or wherever the Lord leads.

Timothy Nesho Patterson, Jr., shown here with his 2017 prom date, is an outstanding, delightful young man, who is fun to be around. He has excellent potential, and is capable of being successful at what ever he chooses.

Tim was an outstanding football player at Wharton High School, reports that he has been accepted and enrolled in college, and would like to continue in seeking a career in football.

Michael Anthony Resendez (Mikey) would like to go to college, and is also open to tech schools, and on the job training in the interest of learning and receiving business and career training.

Mikey has spoken to John and Bev Luther about working for their company, and John will surely share the ups and downs of participating and owning a company in the residential and light commercial design - build business.

Roderick Temple, Jr. (Maine), as his big smile and cheerful expression indicates, is a truly delightful and lovable character.

Roderick or "Maine" as he prefers to be called, was a multiple sports athlete at Wharton High School, rising to the top as a defensive end on the football team, and steadily improving his game as a 6'4" center for the Running Tigers basketball team.

Maine would like to attend college, and has a very good chance at earning a sports scholarship in football or basketball. He would like to study business management, perhaps applying his talents and educational effort to a career in basketball.

Tim Young is shown here in the white T-Shirt, with other scholarship recipients, Mikey and Tim Patterson. Everyone knows Tim Young is hard to catch for a picture, and much more so on the basketball floor. Together with his twin brother Josh, Tim put the fast in the Wharton Running Tigers BBall team.

Tim is interested in attending college, and in the meantime he has started classes and hands on training as a welder. Who knows what the future may hold, as he has outstanding basketball talents, worthy of a college scholarship.

Special Request

As you consider the various and brief stories of these young people, also considering the sometimes difficult transition from High School to life choices involving college and career. Please pray for each of them.

We know according to God'sword that He promises, "I knows the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11. Perhaps we can all provide a boost of encouragement, and love that will help them find the success that God has planned.
